Step 4 – Be proactive

step4Law enforcement has a lot going on and while you may want them to focus only on helping to solve your missing person case, they do have other people that need help also.   Chances are that when you feel that nobody is doing anything with your case, there is a lot going on behind the scenes that you are not aware of. Don’t give up hope and keep being proactive in your search.

You can call the point of contact for your case and ask for updates, but you should also be focusing on helping to share the information about the missing person.

There are many things that can be done to get the word out about the missing person:

  • Make flyers with their information and post them in areas where they are likely to go or have been in the past.
  • Utilize the internet and social media to get the word out quickly and to a large audience.  The resources we have listed for your state in this section are very good about sharing information about missing persons.
  • Contact news outlets and ask if they can run a story about the missing person.
  • Organize a search.
  • If you know that the missing person has gone missing in a specific area, contact one of the many Search and Rescue organizations that are trained in these types of search operations.  You should know that some Search and Rescue (SAR) organizations can only be activated by request of law enforcement and first responders.  You can ask the SAR organizations if they have any advice and they may be able to connect you with someone that can help.
  • Share information at truck stops and website and facebook pages that are dedicated to getting missing person information to truckers.
  • Ask if you can post flyers on public transportation or at least see if the drivers will accept the flyers.
  • Share the flyers with local taxi cab companies and see if they can distribute them to their drivers.

Go to the next step

  1. Call Around
  2. File a Missing Person Report
  3. Share the Information
  4. Be Proactive
